(Look across the street for this building.)
Once Mentholatum became a household name, A.A. Hyde built a new building at Douglas and Cleveland in 1909. There, they manufactured various products for the company until the building was sold in 1937. After that, the iconic building hosted several enterprises. From 1942 to 1960, Sedgwick County’s welfare department was housed there. In 1960, the building was remodeled for the Wichita Drafting College. And in 1980, the Mentholatum Building became home to The Spice Merchant, where the company remains to the present day. Just imagine – when you go inside now, you smell fresh coffee being roasted and ground... but a century ago, you’d have smelled the bright, unmistakable scent of menthol!
