Originally built in 1858, the Mitchell River Drawbridge stands over Chatham's Mill Pond. This "hot spot" for fishing has gone through many changes over its 162 years. The Mitchell River Drawbridge was closed for repairs for various periods of time throughout the 1900's. These repairs took place beginning in 1907 and continued off and on until 1976, when it was decided that the drawbridge should be restructured. In 1986 the newly contructed Mitchell River Drawbridge was re-opened once again. In 2014 the drawbridge was partially replaced, and most recently in 2016, it was completely rebuilt.
Prior to its total remodel, the Mitchell River Drawbridge was thought to be the nation's last remaining wooden drawbridge. During the reconstruction of the current drawbridge, an original piece of railing was incorporated into the design. This historic railing is covered in countless scratches and carvings from the rods of the many generations of fishermen who spent their time here.
