Monument Duarte Pacheco: Cristino da Silva, one of the most famous 'Modernist" architect in Portugal conceived a schematic monument: a solid column, 5 meters in diameter and 17 meters high, as a symbol of the gigantic work carried out by the eminent Minister. The unfinished and fractured aspect of the column would be a plastic allegory to life and work so abruptly interrupted. At the base of the column facing the axis of the square, a plinth was placed with a bronze bas-relief with the minister's effigy. This was flanked by two palms of glory carved in stone. Standing on a circular platform measuring 30 meters in diameter and framed by a 4-meter high semicircular support wall and a double side staircase, the monumental column was decorated with bas-reliefs representing the infrastructure with which Duarte Pacheco had endowed the country. On the wall is engraved Salazar's phrase (the word Salazar was deleted in 1976) “A life quickly lived and entirely consecrated”.
