1033 Nicollet Mall
Nicollet is the most walked street in Minneapolis—more than 20,000 pedestrians pass through its busiest intersection each day. The primary goal of the Nicollet renovation was to serve these people by creating a livelier, greener, more pedestrian-friendly street. As the designers of the new Nicollet, James Corner Field Operations began with a deep respect for the history, identity and spirit of the place. They retained Halprin’s signature curve and reinstated his original intent for a series of social spaces along the Mall.
To foster an even more eventful and social street, they created new flexible spaces to support and enhance the existing outdoor cafes, the farmers market and other public space activities and encourage new activities in the future.
The result includes generously-scaled and clearly marked sidewalks, easily navigable intersections, new social spaces and destinations that are attractions year-round, a curated outdoor gallery of public art, and more than 240 new trees.
