In 1893, Henry Lepper, a tinsmith, became Northcote's postmaster. After his death in 1906, his wife Edith filled the position until 1929, when the post office moved to its later location across from The Bridgeway. While serving as postmaster, Edith raised eight children and provided many services to the community. After their first house near the wharf burned down in 1902, this building became their new home, the post and telephone office, as well as a lending library, stationers, and haberdashery. The Leppers were the New Zealand Herald's main agents on the North Shore. Their eldest son, George, used to row across the harbour early in the morning to get the newspapers for delivery unless the water was too rough.
