Created By: Wichita History Walk
The history of crumbly burgers in Wichita started on July 4, 1930, with the opening of Tom McEvoy's NuWay restaurant. The store became known for its homemade root beer and curly fries. After McEvoy died, his wife Helen continued to run the stores until the 1970s. It was then bought by a customer, Gene Friedmun. In 1981, Neal Stong joined as a partner and later bought the chain in the 1990s. There are five NuWays in Wichita. The core menu remains the same as the original and has many long-time fans.
