New Zealand's oldest surviving bridge, built between 1843 and 1851, registered as a Cate ory 1 historic place by the Historic Places Trust (refer photograph over . Built using Sydney sandstone which was used as ballast on ships coming from Australia and unloaded, replaced by timber as timber was more valuable. A sketch by John Jolliffe, a ship's surgeon on the Pandora in 1851, showed the bridge very clearly.
