The Okinawa newt is found only in the Ryukyu Archipelago off the southern coast of Japan. They are also called the sword-tailed newt due to the shape of their tale resembling a sword, or fire-bellied newts due to the orange coloring on their underside. They also are poisonous. Okinawa newts are often found in rice paddies and road side ditches, their numbers have decreased over the years due to habitat destruction and land development.
