Old Brunswick County Jail

The Old Brunswick County Jail and Museum, built in 1904, is located at the corner of East Nash and Rhett Streets. Built in 1904, it served as the county jail and sheriffs headquarters until 1978 when the entire county govemmental complex moved to the local town of Bolivia. Now it is the home to a museum established by the Southport Historical Society. The first floor offers a jailer's family room relics and special exhibits. The second floor has two cells, a large walkabout, with a permanent exhibit. The museum is open on Wednesdays and Saturday from April to October. In addition, the Old Jail is also open on Fridays from June, July and August or by special requests. Heritage Walk and Garden: The colorful flower garden next to the Old Jail is filled with shrubs and flowers that were popular when the jail was built in 1904. The Heritage Walk consists of a stone walkway commemorating people, a police dog and one hurricane, who helped shape the history of Southport.
