Old Church building was moved here

New Albin, Iowa 52160, United States

Information

The Catholic Church has a rich history with our family in New Albin. New Albin's first church was built in 1867 and named Holy Cross. Holy Cross was originally constructed on a site three miles southwest of New Albin which had been donated by John Hurley (Our relative. He was the father of Frank who married Martin's daughter, Kathryn). Martin Moore (our immigrant ancestor, Patrick Kelly, Eugene Kerrigan, Fred Hardy, Edmond Burke (brother-in-law of Martin), John Hurley, Dan and Peter Early, and George Wilson (who was not Catholic), hewed and hauled logs to build that church. Holy Cross Church was used until the erection of a frame building that was located in what is now St. Joseph Church parking lot adjacent to the north side of the present brick church.

When the present brick church was built the old structure was moved to this site (where the Alley Kat bar / restaurant stood in 2010). Emilia Batteen and Mary Alice (Gabbett) Moore were among the first ones to be baptized in Holy Cross. Through the years, it has housed a variety of stores, a restaurant, a hospital and in more recent years, an apartment house.

Is the Alley Kat bar still here?
