The Old Brunswick County Courtjhouse/ Southport City Hall was built in the mid 1850s. The present structure is probably the second building on the site. Southport, then Smithville, was the county seat of Brunswick County until 1978, when the seat was moved and the structure was given to Southport for their City Hall. The building was covered with stucco in the 1960s.
The Up Your Arts organization is working with Southport elected officials to preserve the historic Brunswick County Courthouse, which also served as the City of Southport City Hall before it succumbed to the ravages of time.
