The plastered brick structure across the road, built in a stripped Classical style, was originally Takapuna's first telephone exchange. The subdividing of large estates in Takapuna in the 1910s to provide additional room for holiday homes and houses placed a great demand on the newly-opened post office next door. While it initially was designed to support the town's telephone network, the post office quickly ran out of room. The town decided that a separate telephone exchange was required. The building was completed in 1920.
