Called "Portland's Living Room," Pioneer Courthouse Square dates to 1849 when Elijah Hill, a shoemaker, purchased the block for $24 and a pair of high boots. Fast forward to 1984, and the square as we know it today was established. Starbucks opened their square store in 1989 and in 2008, Pioneer Courthouse Square was selected as one of the Great Public Spaces in America by the American Planning Association.
