Information

The Pointer-Lang House was built in 1904 by F.H. Pointer for his family. Mr. Pointer was a local merchant who operated his ice cream parlor on Bank Street and later served as the Director of the Tennessee Valley Savings Bank & Trust Company.

The Queen Anne Victorian Cottage home features a distinct wraparound porch and steeply pitched roof. Original heart pine floors are beautifully intact on the main level as well as four original coal burning fireplaces and mantels. The stained heart pine trim and crown molding styles are distinctive adding charm and interest to the rooms. The living room boasts original pocket doors and curtain rods for the heavy curtains (Portiere) which help retain the warmth throughout the winter months. While the home’s exterior appearance is cottage-like, the interior surprisingly offers generously-sized rooms. Through the years, the ground floor retained its basic original footprint. In the 1980s, the home went through a major renovation with three bedrooms and two bathrooms added in the attic space. Two exterior porches were also incorporated to form the home’s current footprint.

The current owners, Glenn and Pam Lang, have completely remodeled the kitchen, master bathroom, and backyard. They’ve also made major repairs to the foundation and electrical system. After retirement from a job that took them to nine states and four countries, the couple settled in Decatur to be close to family. They purchased the home in 2016 excited to become part of the inviting Old Decatur community with its tree-lined streets and restored historic downtown area.
