Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando was commissioned to design the building in 2001. It became Ando's first freestanding building in North America to be open to the public. Richard Serra's sculpture Joe, in honor of Joseph Pulitzer jr. commands the courtyard that connects the Pulitzer to the Contemporary Art Museum (CAM). Both establishments host groundbreaking exhibitions, and ar fee and open to the public.
The inaugrual exhibition featured a selection of works from Emily and Joseph Pulitzers' private collections, including artwork by Roy Lichtenstein, Claude Monet Pablo Picasso, mark Rothko, Kiki Smith, and Andy Warhol.
