Information

The building you see is actually the third Reno County Court House. The current building is in the Art Deco Style, constructed in 1929 and finishing in 1930. The building has marble detail throughout. The northern elevator still retains the original details. The floor dial is original as are the doors that have four etchings that refer to "Industry, wisdom, strength and justice." Burled walnut and mahogany are the primary woods found in the court rooms. The second Court House was built in 1901 and was located on the Southeast corner of Avenue B and Main. In 1925, court house employees began to notice cracks forming throughout the building. Within the next month the cracks grew worse and the building was evacuated. After an examination of the grounds around the courthouse, it was discovered that the Carey Salt and Cold storage facility next door was the culprit. Emerson Carey offered to the buy the Courthouse and the land around it. Ultimately, Carey was sued for $200,000 and the Court House was razed in 1929. The original Reno County Courthouse originally stood just west of the second Courthouse on Ave B and Main. It was a simple, square brick structure that was constructed shortly after the city was established in 1872.
