During the 1950s, the East Coast Bays Borough Council built a roller-skating rink that became a popular attraction. Saturday nights at the rink included men’s and ladies’ speed skates and a men’s hockey game. The young women displayed their skating prowess wearing brightly coloured dresses, while the young men were stylishly clad in checked shirts, black jeans, and skating boots, with an inch of luminous green or burnt orange sock showing between. In early June 1959, local skaters were no doubt more exhausted than usual after a skating endurance test was held at the rink as part of the celebrations for the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
