The original chapel, built in 1850, was subsequently incorporated into the Francis Xavier Mission School building which is now the Parish Centre. This school was started by Dr John Rooney the resident Parish Priest. In 1885 the foundation stone of the St Simon and St Jude Catholic Church building was laid by Dr Rooney. The church bell, dated 1871, was cast in the Dockyard for Dr Rooney. While the metal was still in its molten state his naval friends threw silver coins in to sweeten the tone. In 1946 a double storeyed extension was built on the south side of the Church.
