Roxy's Downtown shares some of the history of a staple of Wichita. 25cent theatre, penny arcade, pool hall, and Roxy's Downtown cocktail club, and Cabaret Oldtown. Now Roxy's Downtown hosts events heavy on the musicals. A small, intimate venue, the feel of history is part of the experience. "Disaster!" is currently playing, a musical which "pays homage to the 70s disaster movies".
WSU Libraries Special Collection has a collection of "Tihen Notes" which offer a window into the history of the building Dr. Tihen was someone who took great notes on his readings of the Wichita Eagle/Beacon and enjoyed researching newspapers. According to his notes, drawings of the building, to be built, were published int he Wichita Eagle on Sunday, March 23, 1913. The son of J.R. Mead the founder of Wichita, "Bunnie" Mead commisioned the building in 1913. J.R. Mead is the Mead of Mead Avenune in town. Dr. Tihen's notes show that the building site previously hosted Rosenbloom Dry Goods, In 1979 a fire caused extensive damage and was occupied by Dr. Redbird's Medicinal Inn restaurant at the time.
The application for National Registration of Historical Places describes the building as having "Classical Revival details....some of the most detailed terra cotta trim".
