Did you know hundreds of students in Lodi help raise baby salmon right in their classrooms every year?
The Salmon in the Classroom program takes place from 2nd grade to high school in 54 classrooms in Lodi Unified School District. Students receive salmon eggs in January, place them in specially prepared classroom tanks, then monitor water temperature and pH daily. These freshwater tanks must be kept clean and cold by special equipment (around 50°F) as the eggs develop into fry (free-swimming baby salmon) over 6-8 weeks. The program culminates in a release event at Lodi Lake, where the salmon are released into the lake, and nearly 900 students rotate through hands-on learning stations run by community partners.
The program is growing just like the salmon populations these students are learning to protect. To learn more or start the program at your school, visit the website.
