During the second decade of the twentieth century, the Salvation Army established a holiday camp on this site for children living at Salvation Army homes. Among those who holidayed at the camp were the girls from “The Grange” home in Herne Bay, who spent six weeks each summer at the camp. Initially tents provided accommodation, but more permanent structures were subsequently built including a well-used Salvation Army hall. The site is now occupied by a rest home, which was opened in March 1984 by Sir Robert Muldoon and named after the wife of Auckland businessman and benefactor Jack Plowman.
