This sculpture was crafted by Bill Hayes and unveiled in September 2008, shortly after the opening of the Chelsea Estate Heritage Park. The artwork repurposes a ship’s grab (mechanical jaws) that was once used to transfer sugar from the many ships visiting the Chelsea refinery. This grab gathered more than 8.5 million tons of raw sugar from 1943 until 2005.
