John Sim built this homestead as part of a large horticultural property where he produced early crops in two large glasshouses as well as outdoor fruit, flowers, and vegetables. Sim was greatly concerned with community affairs and a frequent correspondent to The Advocate.
When World War I began, he helped form the local Patriotic League and was chair of the committee established to buy comforts for the men at the Front. The community organised farewell parties for departing soldiers and Sim became angry when the local teacher complained about “frivolous functions” (by which he meant alcohol was consumed) being held at the school. Sim cleaned out his barn and made it available for farewell functions and dances for the district’s growing number of young people. This was an interim measure. He joined forces with other locals to build a community hall.
