The slender-tailed meerkat is part of the mongoose family and are around 20 inches long. They can drive off much larger predators through aggressive displays. Highly social, they live in colonies of up to 30 individuals which are dominated by an alpha male and alpha female. These alphas are the only pair in a colony that will reproduce. The rest of the colony will serve as babysitters once the pups are born.
