The Community Building at 223 East Bay Street was originally the site of a USO building, which was dedicated in1942 and used for movies, dances, indoor games and other activities for the military personnel stationed in the area. The USO later became the community's gathering place after the war was over and Southport was no longer a military town. That building burned inJanuary 1995. The present building is now the site for many community and private events especially weddings. It has a lovely view of the Cape Fear River.
