As an incentive to attract skilled workers who needed to be on call overnight, the Colonial Sugar Refining Company built four specialist cottages along Colonial Road. These two-storey structures were erected between 1908 and 1910 using bricks quarried from clay found within the Chelsea Estate. Each structure cost £1,200 and was large enough to support two full-sized families. Changes in labour laws and company processes meant that the cottages were no longer needed. They were vacated in 1976 and quickly fell into disrepair. Beginning in mid-1983, the cottages underwent renovation and were subsequently leased as private residences. They are now part of the Chelsea Estate Heritage Park.
