Across Anzac Street is St Georges Presbyterian Church. This is the second church built on the site. The Governor-General Uchter Knox, Earl of Ranfurly, and his wife, Constance, opened the original wooden church in 1902. The church initially was under the jurisdiction of the Devonport presbytery until 1918, when it appointed its own minister. St Georges was replaced in 1965 with the current building.
Diagonally across the roundabout is the former Takapuna Police Station. This facility began as the policeman’s house, which had a small gaol behind it. A small community constable’s office is still situated beside the original site, but the main North Shore police station is now off Constellation Drive near Mairangi Bay.
Behind you is the Shore City mall. Prior to the mall’s opening in 1974, the section of land between Anzac and Como Streets was a residential area with a motel built in the early 1960s at the Lake Road–Anzac Street intersection. The opening of the mall expanded the commercial centre of Takapuna beyond Hurstmere Road and Halls Corner and prompted further commercial development along Como and Auburn Streets. The mall was enlarged in the late 1980s to its current size.
Turn down Lake Road and cross the street at the crosswalk. Stop at the plaque beside Katsubi.
