Also known as The Actor’s Chapel, St Malachy’s has been serving the theatre community since 1920. Mass times, confessions and other services are scheduled to accommodate the theatre schedule. You can attend a mass at 11:00 pm after the theatres let out. Inside the chapel there is an Artist’s shrine. It was the setting for the wedding of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. to Joan Crawford. The funeral of playwright Tennessee Williams was held here also. During the height of the AIDS epidemic, which had a devastating impact on the theatre community, Father Moore of St Malachy stepped up. He was honored, in 1991, with a Tony Award for Extraordinary Devotion to the Theatrical Community. I would venture to say that St Malachy is the only church in the world whose bells play, “There’s No Business Like Show Business.”
