St Mary’s Chapel
A pre-Reformation chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary - St Mary’s Chapel – is said to have existed in the church grounds when the 15th century church tower was built. It is thought to have stood in the north-west corner of the old churchyard on the site of the present Luffness burial ground. (See photo 17 in slider above). Unfortunately, the early chapel site has never been properly assessed. Around 1927 several stone coffins, including one made of solid stone and chiselled to the shape of a body and head, were found approximately thirty metres west of the chapel site.
