First opened in 1904 as St Mary’s Women’s Home, the buildings here originally served as an Anglican home for unwed mothers. The building with the orange tiled roof is the Chapel of St Mary Magdalene, which was dedicated in 1911. The white building immediately to its left is one of the original buildings. Sir John Logan Campbell gifted a nursery to the home in 1911, and a nurses’ home was added to the site in 1925. The home also served as a maternity unit between 1940 and 1961, and in 1983 the home was formally renamed and reopened as St Mary’s Family Home. This signalled the home’s revised role as a social centre for mothers and children, adding day care to their services as well as family counselling, play groups, budgeting guidance, and home management assistance. The home also now serves as the base for the Anglican Trust for Women and Children.
