St. Stephen's Episcopal began as a mission in 1878. Due to lack of funds and membership, parishioners originally met at the Brace Brother's Steam Laundry and worshiped amidst the hiss of natural gas from the furnace and the squeak of the water pump outside. The cornerstone of the building which can be seen today was laid in 1903.
One of St. Stephen's most unique features is its beautiful stained glass windows. The windows we first envisioned by Dr. William Porkess, rector of the church in the 1920s. Dr. Porkess wanted the windows to tell the story of Christianity. He consulted with craftsman as far away as London. Work began on the windows in the 1940s.
