Information

The STEPHEN D. LEE HOUSE (1847) is at 305 Seventh Street North (662-327-8888). Go back down Main Street the way you came and continue until you see Seventh Street North on your left. Turn left onto Seventh Street. It is open to the public only on Fridays, but an appointment can be made at other times: call Carolyn Burns at 662-435-2368 to make an appointment. The Columbus chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy maintains a Confederate Museum on the second floor. Of special interest in the house are two portraits. The first, of General Stephen D. Lee, is a copy of a painting by Nicola Marschall (1829-1917). The full-length portrait of General Nathan Bedford Forrest was painted in 1899 by E.F. Andera (?). The winter setting may be West Tennessee in December 1863. The painting is owned by Mississippi State University.
