Sterling High School, my own alma mater, holds its place in Greenville’s history as the first black high public school in our city. It was established in 1929, and it was influential in the integration of Greenville’s public facilities and accommodations.
On September 15, 1967, Sterling High School’s senior class sponsored a dance in the gym for the Miss Homecoming benefit drive. Unfortunately, a fire was started and the school burnt to the ground.
The tragedy was unable to destroy our spirits, and the community of Sterling High School alumni thrives. The Sterling Community Center also helps to empower Greenville County residents, young and old.
