These homes nestled neat.
In 1886, this L. R. Burleigh print depicted a few homes on Union Street at the base of the hill leading to Clough Avenue. In 1939, this space became the home of Windsor High School. This aerial photo was taken by Henry DeWolf. The house across from the school was torn down to widen Union Street. Except for the gym, this Windsor High School was demolished in 1990. Currently the town offices, fire and police services, and the Windsor Recreation Center occupy the same space. Look at the steep bank behind the Recreation Center. This is not man made, but is a geological remnant of Lake Hitchcock, a lake that formed as the ice age glacier receded about 15,000 years ago. This very long, narrow lake reached from St. Johnsbury VT 200 miles south to Rocky Hill CT where glacial debris formed a natural dam. The lake eventually drained leaving the Connecticut River in its place.
