William John Young moved to Papatoetoe with his wife Jane in 1860, purchasing a 112-acre block of land fronting the Great South Road opposite the Presbyterian Church from Mr Overton. The property was known as ‘The Grange’. The original Grange homestead was a one-storey brick house. A later owner, Henry Wade, added a second storey in 1890. The homestead was located near the corner of Shirley Road and Great South Road, behind what is now 59 Great South Road.
The Ōtāhuhu Golf Club, formed in 1924, also moved to this site in 1931. The homestead’s land was sold to the club, and their clubrooms were originally based in The Grange homestead. The club’s successor, The Grange Golf Club, sold the homestead and land along its Great South Road frontage in 1957, and the new owner later demolished the original homestead.
Grange Road itself was originally named Hall Road after Mr. A. W. Hall, M.P. 1929, and once stretched across both sides of Great South Road . Mr Hall owned the land from here to the current location of Papatoetoe Intermediate School. In 1965 the road was given its current name, and the section on the opposite side of Great South Road became part of Motatau Road instead.
Head east towards Great South Road until you reach the end of Grange Road. Turn left and begin walking north along Great South Road.
