In 1906, Louis and Adelaide Huber constructed the mixed-use structure at 2620 T Street. The entrepreneurial Huber family saw an opportunity to become business owners in the growing Newton Booth neighborhood, and opened a grocery store on the ground level of the home, with the family occupying the apartment upstairs. The Huber store appears to have been the first retail operation within the NB neighborhood. Adelaide Huber was the store’s primary proprietor, while Louis kept his brewing job at the nearby Buffalo Brewery on R Street and helped out as needed. The Hubers sold the store to John J. Fatur in 1925, and moved out of the neighborhood. The building continues in use as a store today and is known as the “Sun-up Market”.
