It was a space in the 1940s, that was a meeting place for affluent African Americans, it was a social club and it's at its core. It was a place to house so many people, so many educators, Dr King was at the Parkway Ballroom Paul Robeson had his 60th birthday party at the ballroom.
When I was handed the torch it was really about celebrating the persons that were my mentors in the space, as well as the generation that was coming up, so it was going to be the Barack Obama's when they're running for Congress at the time. And then the Senate and then, obviously, the Presidency. You had so many other educators and politicians, comedians, everything... Without spaces like this the history that we're talking about now, where would you get it?
