The Whelan House ~ 15 Rideau Street
This home was built between 1875-1895 by Mr Whelan, with bricks from his Westport brick yard, located on Bedford St. The building is a 1 1/2 story, L-shaped plan with a front gable and an off-centre door. The verandah originally extended across the whole front of the house. The post and bracket design of the verandah became popular in Upper Canada after 1860, replacing elaborate treillage. The Whelan home is an example of "picturesque eclectic style" which characterized the High Victorian phase (1850-1890) of Victorian architecture.
