United States Island, 501-519 Altair Place, 1913

Los Angeles, California 90291, United States

Created By: preserving public places

Information

The island and presumably the cottages were created by Abbot Kinney. They continue to be a wonderful complex of rental bungalows. Each cottage on United States Island is named for a U.S. state.

Originally the island was surrounded by canals and only accessible by foot bridges. The bungalows are located in what was within the original canal area. The island is boarderd by Altair and Cabrillo. Unlike many, these streets retained their original canal names.

PBS compiled historic photo's and interesting information here: https://www.pbssocal.org/shows/lost-la/the-lost-canals-of-venice-of-america
