Upper Coulee - The Mature Forest

At this point you are seeing a mature forest stand of oaks, hickory, walnut and maples. There are several ways to identify tree species. Let begin by finding the easiest to identify trees - the maples. In addition to maples distintive leaf, we can find maples by the branch patterns. Note on photo 1 that the branches are almost all exactly symetrical to one another.
