921 Nicollet Mall
“Through Walk Zones” are a key pedestrian circulation feature on Nicollet. They are typically ten feet wide and adjacent to the buildings on both sides of the street bringing pedestrian traffic in closer proximity to Nicollet storefronts. Cafe seating, street furniture, lighting, special features, and transit shelters have been moved outside of these walking zones.
This strategy is similar to the original Lawrence Halprin design and prioritizes pedestrians, greening, and support for activities such as sidewalk cafes. This part of the sidewalk is also where many buildings along Nicollet have basements which extend under the sidewalk, called areaways, which prevent trees from being planted, therefore the sidewalks above become favorable and functional circulation space.
