Make a U-turn and head back toward West Point. At the Route 50 intersection (stoplight), reset your odometer again. Keep going straight. At 9.0 miles, you will see a brown sign on the right for WAVERLY PLANTATION (1852). Turn right at the sign. Waverly Plantation will be at mile 10.5, on the left, just prior to the Waverly landing on the Tombigbee. The address is 1852 Waverly Mansion Road (phone 662-494-1399).
The house and gardens are open to the public. There is an admission charge. There is a tradition that Forrest spent a night here, in the Egyptian Room. Certainly, Colonel Barteau was here, crossing his brigade over the river just before the Battle of Okolona.
The Waverly mansion (1852), near where Colonel Clark R. Barteau, in temporary command of Bell's Brigade, crossed the Tombigbee River on the night of February 20, 1864, headed for Okolona.
