This remarkable tree is a European Weeping Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'pendula'). It is a cultivar. That means it was developed by grafting a "weeping" twig that was found in an English park long ago onto a normal European Beech twig. It's a man-made combination of two trees. This cultivar is highly valued for its form, color and distinction. It's interesting in that this tree has gotten quite large in a short period of time. It was planted around 2005. Even though the twigs bend over and "weep", the tree can still grow quite large. The twigs grow upward in the early spring, then "weep" later in the spring. It is not a native tree, but can grow well in Michigan. It is not invasive; it will not spread or reproduce naturally. There are two forms of the tree. This one is the mushroom form. There is also a narrow upright form. The tree has a beautiful silvery smooth bark. It's a fabulous tree. Stop your crying!
