Information

  • Whippororwill was the home of Dr. Jared Potter Kirtland, one of Lakewood's most illustrious citizens: naturalist, botanist, doctor, legislator, teacher, writer, and co-founder of Case Medical School.
  • Construction on the house began in 1839 and finished in 1842. Dr. Kirtland's land stretched all the way to Lake Erie.
  • The gardens Kirtland kept at Whippoorwill were legendary, and many scientists, naturalists and even celebrities traveled to view them.
  • In 1953, despite local protests, the home was sold to Kroger's grocery store and torn down to make way for a new facility.
