Whippororwill was the home of Dr. Jared Potter Kirtland, one of Lakewood's most illustrious citizens: naturalist, botanist, doctor, legislator, teacher, writer, and co-founder of Case Medical School.
Construction on the house began in 1839 and finished in 1842. Dr. Kirtland's land stretched all the way to Lake Erie.
The gardens Kirtland kept at Whippoorwill were legendary, and many scientists, naturalists and even celebrities traveled to view them.
In 1953, despite local protests, the home was sold to Kroger's grocery store and torn down to make way for a new facility.
