To the north of the Gracie family lived the Williams family. Mr Williams worked at the Devonport Naval Base and commuted to Devonport from Glenfield daily. Meanwhile, his wife milked their 12 cows by hand and separated the cream. The entrance to Saint Barnabas Anglican Church was the farm gate, where she left the cream cans for collection. The family also grew strawberries, as did many local farms. During the strawberry season, the school closed at 2.30pm so the children could help with the picking.
