This walking tour is intended for Boston Public Schools ethnic studies teachers using the Native Mascots and Indigenous Peoples' Day case study. The case study is centered on the issue of “fighting erasure;” an (ongoing) issue that Native communities have struggled against and survived since the very beginnings of settler colonialism in what would become the United States. There are 3 examples within this overarching case study that demonstrate the issue of erasure: 1) mascots; 2) Columbus Day; 3) the Massachusetts State Seal.
Since two of the sites are beyond walking distance, we recommend walking from Site 1 (Columbus Statue-North End) to Site 2 (Old State House), then take the T (Green Line) from Government Center to Kenmore Square (Fenway Park) and then Babcock Street on the B-Boston College Line (Braves Field Way).
