Vinca major Note, large, simple leaves with smooth leaf margins
Syringa reticulata Note, OPPOSITE (cherry is alternate) cherry-like bark Large, twin terminal buds large clusters of seed capsules
Cornus mas fat shrub or low-branched small tree Note clusters of bright yellow flowers, interesting platey bark
Forsythia x intermedia Note raised, round lenticels on stems, yellow-green color of young branches  
 Cornus racemosa (Swida racemosa) Note remains of last year's flower clusters in persistant pedicels
Syringa vulgaris Note large, twin terminal buds (flower clusters already out this year)
Syringa patula 'Miss Kim' Note twin terminal buds with purplish bud scales rounded habit, much smaller than Common lilac
