Madison has long been a tourism destination known for its natural and built beauty. It boasts over 200 years of historic architecture, tree lined streetscapes, a lively commercial district, walkable neighborhoods, colorful gardens, and assortment of artistic offerings and events. There are several public artworks found throughout downtown. Many of these are murals and three-dimensional works that will last for generations. But Madison often receives temporary public art installations, so there is something new to see every year.
Madison has had the honor of being designated by the Indiana Arts Commission as a Cultural District. It’s the combination of old and new that makes this Arts and Cultural District so unique; beautifully preserved, historic in nature, but interestingly progressive and contemporary. The environment invites those from all over and inspires the artist to tell the story with their art, their words, and images that are unique to this little city.
Both local artists that call Madison home and artists from around the United States have left their mark on the town. See just how many public artworks have been created here in Madison, sizes big and small!
