Tour Information

Welcome to The Avenue Concept FOCUS ON: Sculpture Self-Guided Art Tour

Sculpture has an uncanny way of captivating attention. From the form and shape, the way it lives in the space it occupies, the clues about its creation story, sculpture can ground us in a neighborhood, become a signpost, tell us a story, or take us to different places or ways of thinking and seeing.

This tour is designed to guide you through a deeper look at sculptures that The Avenue Concept has installed at 5 specific sites in the Downtown Corridor. The artworks at these sites (called “pads”) rotate every 1-2 years, allowing new works to come on to view. The Avenue Concept uses a jury process to discuss and decide on which artworks will go on display and artworks are suggested through an open call process with artists. The current work on view comes from artists who use form, materials, and theme to tell stories. We hope you find a story of your own in their mastery.

Get started: To make the most of your time, plan what time you'll go and where you will park (check to see if 2 hr parking is free in Downtown), where you will eat/take out, what you will wear. Check out the map and the points of interest in advance. This tour follows no specific route so you can wander to artworks from any direction.

At each stop, you can learn more about the artwork by watching videos and reading more in the app. Dig deeper and explore each piece by considering our ~Take A Closer Look~ questions. If you are really enjoying your adventure, pull out a pen and paper and answer some of these more in-depth creative prompts in our Art Explorer creativity guide.

Two things to remember as you set off to discover:

Public art never closes! Public art is made to be enjoyed by the community as a source of inspiration, conversation, and engagement. Free and open to the public. If you love something, ask yourself why. If you don't, dig into that too! Art is meant to be an active way of engaging with the world. It’s something we all need.

Together, we make public art happen. The Avenue Concept is the leading nonprofit public art organization in Rhode Island. Our team imagines public art installations, works with artists to help implement those projects and then shares the stories of those artists and artworks with the community in order to make our cities more beautiful, livable, viable and safe. We make public art happen. As a nonprofit, we rely on people like you to help through financial support, volunteering, and sharing what we do with your friends and family. Thank you!
