Information

Known as the Tyler-Spite House, this residential structure stands out along West Church Street with its stucco exterior painted in beige. The house was built by Dr. Sam Tyler in 1813 who then added to it a year later making it the size it is today. The “Spite” part of the name comes from the rumor that Tyler expanded the house out of spite for road expansion that was occurring in Frederick. This is an example of a Federal style house, although it differs from many other Federal structures in Frederick due to its stucco facade. The different aspects of the Tyler-Spite House such as its single hung windows with shutters or its small front entry give one a clear picture of the architectural preferences of the early 19th century.
